![]() ![]() Later, Demelza wants to know why Ross so incredibly rude and also left her stuck entertaining his dumb friend on her own. He’s actually really salty and rude to both his wife and his friend, and it seems to come out of nowhere. Ross says if Demelza wants to go over to Sir Hugh’s she can, and he’s sure she can handle herself. He’s surprised to see his old friend, but they bro it out with plenty of dumb army-related jokes. What accent is that even supposed to be? Scottish? Oh, and also Sir Hugh is apparently an infamous lech, and Demelza doesn’t look like she’s planning to go see him anytime soon.Īnyway, Ross comes home in the midst of this conversation. He also has the world’s worst accent – it’s honestly difficult to understand him in places. Apparently he did actually appear in Season 1, when he was in town to investigate some smuggling and murder. There is much to unpack here – first of all, I had to google who Captain McNeil even was, because I had completely forgotten him. He seems very taken with Demelza, and tells her that Sir Hugh Bodregun would really like it if she’d come visit his sick cow. He says he’s in town because the laughably named Unwin Trevaunce his hired him to oversee local security, but he’s happy he can use this time to catch up with old friends. Hi, Ross’ Random Army Friend! Captain McNeil, an old army buddy of Ross’, shows up one day out of the blue at Nampara. Demelza heads off to the beach, to contemplate how to tell Ross that she’s pregnant, or maybe to think how good it would feel to hit him in is dumb face sometimes. He just says he’s been busy with the mine and harvest stuff, and he has to head off to Truro for a shareholders meeting anyway, so he really doesn’t have time for her feelings or anything messy like that. For her part, Demelza wants to know why Ross hasn’t been around much since escaping the threat of prison or worse last week. Of course he actively works to keep this info from his wife, because Ross isn’t so much with the sharing. This statement is proven true almost immediately, when Ross gets a letter that informing him that he has a thousand-pound debt coming due, like, this week. Particularly his finances, because they are terrible. His primary creepy flunky tells Warleggan that even though Ross isn’t dead, they can still go after him in other ways. He seems pretty sure that Ross is out for some serious vengeance and possible physical violence since he, you know, tried to have him killed and all. I think that proper gentlemen probably call this “boxing,” but George is busy throwing punches at nothing in his living room and hyping himself up that these are the skills that are going to protect him from Ross. It’s almost harvest time, and Ross is busy wandering the gorgeous fields of Cornwall, so everything almost feels normal again.Įlsewhere, Vile George Warleggan is learning how to fight. Now that the mess of Ross’ trial is out of the way, the new season of Poldark can get a proper start. Ross’ trial is over, so we’re on to a whole new story this season. Need more details? You can find last week’s recap here. New characters the Penvenens arrive on the scene, and Miss Caroline is quite taken with Ross’ dishy doctor friend Dwight Enys. After much angsting from literally every other character on the show about Ross’ future and a long speech to the jury where he talks about how rough poor people have it in the world, Ross is acquitted, just like we all knew he would be. He even tries to bribe Ross’ awful servant Jud to testify against him. ![]() Vile George Warleggan makes it his personal mission to try and get Ross thrown in jail for life or hanged, because he hates him completely. With Woolworths currently accounting for 34.1pc of domestic beef sales across Australia, and Coles 24.6pc (Nielsen Homescan survey), it’s reasonable to assume that the two combined account for almost 60 percent of all retail beef mince sales across the nation. “At $5/kg, it’s cheaper than buying petfood for my cat,” he said. “At $5 a kilogram, it’s cheaper than buying petfood for my cat” You could easily add another $1 to $1.30/kg for the additional costs, so if there’s ever been a loss leader in Australian beef, we’re looking at it,” he said. ![]() “That does not include mincing, MAP packaging, distribution or shrink, let alone marketing. “It means that Coles and Woolies are tearing-up at least a dollar a kilo just on the wholesale purchase price, and their trim is fresh, not frozen,” the trader said. ![]() A leading export meat trader had frozen 85’s (perhaps a more direct comparison with what’s on the shelf in Coles and Woolies regular mince), on his screen this morning at $6.20-$6.30/kg. Last week’s Steiner Consulting imported beef market quote published by MLA had 90CL frozen trim/cow meat at $6.82/kg in Australian dollar terms, on the wharf in Australia. The retail pricing disparity becomes even more obvious when comparisons are made with current pricing levels for lean grinding beef being exported into the US and other international markets. Loss leader sacrifice might total $2.60/kg While major supermarkets were currently heavily discounting a number of red meat items, both beef and lamb, there were a lot of prices on other grocery lines that had gone up, to compensate, Mr Melrose said. It’s hard to comprehend how the majors will defend this sort of retail pricing, when cattle prices go through the roof, after it rains,” he said. “At the same time, cattle prices to the grower haven’t risen for years. It’s nothing but a predatory attack in independent butchers.” Mince can account for a very large percentage of overall meat purchases, and the figure is growing. “The fact that mince is such a high-volume product makes it even worse. “It’s a total loss leader being applied by the major supermarket groups, and in my opinion it amounts to predatory pricing,” Mr Melrose said. That’s before the butcher’s costs, ranging from refrigeration to wages, rent other fixed costs, or any retail margin.” ![]() Butchers would be paying up to $2/kg more for raw material to produce equivalent mince, even before it gets into their coldroom. “They’re not doing the right thing by the growers, and independent butchers cannot go close to matching that retail price,” Mr Melrose said. The move price-matches a campaign launched by Coles in July last year.įar from being a short-term campaign to clear a stock surplus, for example, both companies indicate the strategy represents ‘permanent, everyday’ prices, rather than one-off, short-term specials.įormer Australian Meat Industry Council national retail president, Kerry Melrose, said the move would appear to suggest that both Coles and Woolworths had placed a ‘death wish’ on the beef industry. Woolworths now sells its regular mince in 900 gram packs, for $4.50/pack. In consumer marketing like the example appearing here, Woolworths proudly proclaims that from today, it has halved the price of its regular mince from $9.99/kg to $5/kg. The question is again being asked as the nation’s largest retailer, Woolworths, today launches a $5/kg mince campaign to customers, matching an identical offer that’s been in place for some time from major rival, Coles. Even the three uses of Brad Fiedel\'s Terminator theme feels cut-and-pasted into the film. ![]() The music by Danny Elfman is serviceable but doesn\'t feel too inspired, and I can\'t blame him given the material he had to work with. The look and feel of the film has a really nice desaturated, silvery sheen everything, and there are some cameos from the original films, which I won\'t discuss here, but will just say that the visual effects are quite good - kudos to ILM for their work on this one. Especially Oscar-winning actress Jane Alexander, who has no purpose being in the film at all. ![]() Connor\'s pregnant wife Kate (Bryce Dallas Howard), fighter pilot Blair Williams (Moon Bloodgood) and Ashdown are all pretty good, but feel wasted here. There are some supporting roles that feel like they were cut down, resulting in performances that feel half-delivered. And as good an actor as he is, Bale\'s role really feels shallow and preachy, without any real purpose. It\'s like jumping into The Two Towers before seeing The Fellowship of the Ring. Since the Future War has been going on, the John Connor in this film is already quite a different character than we\'ve seen before, so we\'re missing a chunk of his personality and can\'t really feel anything for him. The characters are flat and uninteresting, with no back-story really presented to us to allow us to feel anything to them. The story is simple and a bit messy, with plot-holes riddling the narrative. The action - while interesting - plays out like an over-hyped video game. The problem with Terminator Salvation is that once you strip away how good it looks and sounds, there\'s really not much there. But when Reese is captured by Skynet (who is collecting humans to do experiments on them), and Marcus - who is not all he appears to be - is captured by Connor, the decision to launch an attack on Skynet might result in Reese\'s death - and Connor\'s existence being obliterated - unless he can get into Skynet and rescue Reese. He connects up with a young Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) who has been targeted by Skynet for termination since he is the eventual father of John Connor (see Terminator). He broadcasts uplifting and rousing speeches on pirate radio stations, giving hope to the remnants of mankind, while the resistance commanders - led by General Ashdown (Michael Ironside) work from a secret submarine to bring about the end of Skynet.Īfter a signal is discovered that might allow the resistance to shut down Skynet long enough to launch a lethal attack (and prevent the new T-800 models from coming online), Marcus appears on the scene, confused and unsure of his surroundings. Starting out with a prologue where criminal Marcus (Sam Worthington) given the chance to donate his body to science before being executed, the film quickly moves forward to 2018, well past Judgment Day, to the Future War where John Connor (Christian Bale) is not quite the prophesied leader of the resistance against Skynet and the machines. After the success of Casino Royale and The Dark Knight, it\'s not surprising that the powers-that-be would seek to renew the Terminator franchise.ĭirected by McG, Terminator Salvation attempts to build on much of what James Cameron established, but with a few twists, as well as some winks-and-nods to the previous films. It\'s no secret that James Cameron\'s Terminator franchise was exceptionally successful, but we can also be honest about how disappointing Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was. You certainly can\'t blame them for trying. ![]() ![]() ![]()
